Natural Horsemanship in Hand Class

Each task has a one-minute time limit. Any time the task is incomplete in the allotted time zero points will be awarded. You will be given a warning when there are 30 seconds and 10 seconds of your time remaining.

FRIENDLY (desensitizing)

1.Put a tarp on your horses back inside of a designated circle and let him stand still wearing the tarp for 15 seconds. The 15-second count starts when you are in position and your horse is standing still.

a. Get tarp on but remain holding the tarp & lead…………………………..10
b. Stand at least (6 feet away) from horse holding lead…………………….15
c. Stand outside the circle (12 feet away holding lead………………………20
d. Stand outside the circle (22feet away) holding lead………………………25
e. Stand outside the circle (22 feet away) not holding lead…………………50

STEADY PRESSURE (sensitizing)

2. Put both hind feet in a hula hoop move the front end using steady pressure, either direction. One hind foot must always remain in the hoop. If the horse steps both feet out of the hoop you must start again. The most steps accomplished will determine your score.

a. One step in front crossover ………………………………………………10
b. Two steps in front crossover (1/4 circle)…………………………………15
c. Three steps in front crossover…………………………………………….20
d. Four steps in front crossover (1/2 circle)………………………………..25
e. Six steps in front crossover (full 360)…………………………………….50

DRIVING (rhythmic pressure)

3. Put both front feet in the hula hoop move the hind end using rhythmic pressure, either direction. One front foot must always remain in the hoop. If the horse steps both feet out of the hoop you must start again. The most Steps accomplished will determine your score.

a. One step in back crossover……………………………………………….10
b. Two steps in back crossover (1/4 circle)…………………………………15
c. Three steps in back cross over……………………………………………20
d. Four steps in back crossover (1/2 circle)………………………………..25

BACKING & DRAWING (follow the feel & straightness)

4. Sit in a lawn chair, keep your seat in the chair at all times. If your rear comes out of the chair you must start again. Back your horse through cones or barrels, 4 feet apart, then bring the Horse back to you and pet his head. The horse’s front feet must step Behind the object before you bring them back.

a. 12-foot lead get the horse to back to the line but not come forward …….10
b. 12 foot lead get the horse to back to the line and come forward…………15
c. 22-foot lead get the horse to back to the line but not come forward …….20
d. 22 foot lead get the horse to back to the line and come forward…………25
e. 22 foot lead do letter “D” twice………………………………………….......50

SIDEPASS (Lateral movement)

5. Side-pass your horse in front of or over a log, keeping your feet behind the designated line. If your feet cross the line you must start again. You may do either direction or both.

a. Side -pass the horse in front of the logs, one direction…………………...10
b. Side-pass over the log one direction with a 12 foot lead…………………..15
c. Side-pass over the log both directions with a 12-foot lead ……………….20
d. Side-pass over the log one direction with a 22 foot lead…………………..25
e. Side-pass over the log both directions with a 22-foot lead ……………….50

JUMPING (overcoming claustrophobia)

6 Squeeze your horse over barrels. Your feet must stay in a hula-hoop. Your horse must not cross behind your back on the disengage and Must turn, face, and wait for 7 second after each jump.

a. Jump one way using a 12-foot lead ………………………………………10
b. Jump both directions using a 12 foot lead………………………………..15
c. Jump one way using a 22-foot lead ………………………………………20
d. Jump both directions using a 22 foot lead………………………………..25
e. Jump the barrels at least 3 times with a 22 foot lead……………………50
