OCTOBER NEWSLETTER "Doing our Best!"
Dear Horse lovers,

This months newsletter topic was inspired by a question I received from a fellow horse lover who wanted to come to one of my clinics but does not have a way to haul her horse. I am finding that this is a very common problem. So I offered to help this gal find a way to get her horse to a clinic and the following was her response.

I also had a gal who really wanted to come to camp this fall and we found a way for her to haul her horse. She is so glad we found a way for her to attend with her horse. If there is a will there is a way.

"The only thing I worry about is my horse does not haul well. When we took him to horse shows he would paw all the way there and back and I hate for my horse to ruin someone else's horse trailer. I also don't know how well he will load since he has not been in a trailer in 5 or 6 years. I would love to get my horse controllable again, I really miss riding. I just thought I would let anyone who would be willing to give us a ride what they would be getting into.
He has turned into one big bully who doesn't want to leave his friends. I also wonder if I am going to start doing this if I should wait till spring so I can keep working with him. The area where we keep him is just basically a dry lot and we have no where to really ride except the side of the Road or the Trail at Dodge Park. We have no arenas, although we have talked about making a round pen of sorts, though where we would put it is not level. I would love to know what are your thoughts are?"

All of the problems you describe are due to holes in your foundation, lack of an effective communication system, and a fracture in the relationship. You need to develop a partnership with your horse with a 51/49 ratio.(You need to have the 51% contolling interest.)

Right now it sounds like your horse is directing you most of the time. He has a much higher authority in the relationship than you do. He knows exactly what to do in order to push your buttons. He knows he can out last you and when you get frustrated with his antics you'll simply quit. Then you end up rewarding and reinforcing his undesirable behavior. You don't have to get mean or mad, but you do have to learn how to be passively and politely persistent with him.

A dry lot is perfect for riding. You don't need a groomed level arena or round pen to work with or ride your horse. I don't have one. I ride in my dry lot corrals and in my pasture, and get along just fine. It is nice to have those fancy amenities but not a total necessity in order to develop a relationship with your horse.

The longer you wait to get started the longer your problems will take to solve. Without knowing what to do, where to be, when to do it and when to quit, things with your horse won't improve much. It is about your education so you know how to handle the situations your horse presents to you. It is knowing how to respond and how to be a good leader for your horse. It is about being proactive instead of reactive with your horse. It is about being able to read your horse correctly. It is about developing feel, timing, focus, and balance. It is about having a program and sticking to it long enough to get positive results.

I am here for the life of your horsemanship journey. I am the traveling horsewoman with the objective of helping to make horselovers lives with equines safer and more harmonious. I am not the clinician who comes to town once takes your money and then forgets about you. I will remain available to you as long as you want me. I will follow up with e-mails, newsletters, phone calls, study groups, regular lessons, a yahoo chat group, etc. Once you come to one of my clinics you are welcome to call me anytime for support. I will be there for you.

I've seen some pretty miraculous transformations at clinics but never forget that clinics are about process and process takes time. After a clinic you may vacillate between believing in what you know and doubting yourself because of what you don't know. Rest assured that in that gap between your knowledge and ignorance, the relationship and results you get with your horse changes little by little, if you will let it. I encourage you to continue to experiement with the ideas and concepts you learn at a clinic because if you do you will begin to understand them at a deeper and deeper level.

One thing about clinics is that life afterwards is always different. Upon returning home you will be eager to give what you have learned a try. This isn't always easy, that is why I make myself available on a continual basis. I have a dedication and passion to see people live their horse dreams to their fullest and be the best they can possibly be.

There are many nights I lay in bed wondering how to explain something to a horse or a person in a more effective way and I wonder why I care so much. Dedication can feel frustrating at times, and passion can seem like a curse, but the rewards of watching people and their horses progress, and finding even greater excellence makes everything worth it.I have chosen to see life and its many opportunities and challenges as a blessing and not a curse.

We all do our best with our horses according to what we know and where we are, and yet I think many of us feel we fall short of what that best could be. I've come to realize that if I dwell on my failures I take away from the joy of those moments of success where I feel like I've finally connected with my horse or with a student.

When a horse finds softness from within and I find that quiet place of confidence, trust and willingness with him nothing else can compare to it. When a person smiles with gratitutde, sheds a tear of relief, or has an illuminating moment where they find the answer to the question in their soul then I know I have achieved success and all the challenges along the way no longer matter.

The way I interact with horses and humans has changed since I started my study of "natural horsemanship". I am far from enlightenment and still make plenty of mistakes. I still say and do dumb things to horses and people. Occasionally I can still show insecurity and let fear taint my good judgement. But I start each new day with gratitude and give myself persmission to learn from my mistakes. I allow myself time to explore what good judgment, timing, feel, focus and balance really is. I believe with enough time, desire, consistent practice, and good information I will keep getting better and better with both horses and people.

We all do what we can in our little corners of the world to have more good moments than bad and to be the best that we can be. I hope that at least some of the horses and people whose lives I am able to touch through clinics, camps, lessons, and this newsletter are able to do the same. I want to thank each of you who have given me the opportunity to share with you because it has brought me great joy.

Happy Trails,
Sherry Jarvis

JOIN A STUDY GROUP!

In addition to the many clinics we are offering this fall, we are starting some study groups for those interested in getting together to support and encourage one another on their horsemanship journey.

There are several women in the Lincoln area who have already started meeting on a regular basis in order to advance even quicker and stay motivated toward excellence with horses.

There are a few dedicated students in the Grand Island area also starting to meet, and now there is another group in central NE who will meet at Broken Bow.

We would like to see other groups popping up in other areas. I have a lot of students in the Omaha area also, so if you are interested call Sherry 308-730-2150.

The Lincoln group will do two dates a month so that if you miss one you can make the other. The first or second week of the month will be on Tuesdays and the third or fourth week of the month will be on Fridays.

For now we have two locations: On Tuesdays at Ann Sampson's house near Lancaster Event Center and on Fridays at Michelle Lincoln's place near Palymra with a great play ground.

During the winter we will move it to an indoor location, very possibly Lancaster Event Center.

Here are the tentative dates set for the Lincoln group. :
Oct. 9 at Ann's House Oct. 19-21(Sherry will be at Michelle's for lessons)
Nov. 6 & 30
Dec. 4 & 28(Sherry will be at Ann's on the 4th for lessons)

We now have 70 members on our Heart in Your Hand Yahoo Chat Group.
This group is dedicated to natural horsemanship students lead by Sherry & Keith Jarvis whose aim is to help both the horse and rider to become even more successful by presenting a balanced foundation from which you can build a confident, trusting, respectful relationship, without sacrificing the spirit of either the horse or the human. This is a place to share natural horsemanship philosophies and how horses change our lives including those little victories/defeats that don’t mean anything to the "normal" crowd, to have a place to celebrate/vent leadership issues, blinding flashes of the obvious, or brainstorm creative ideas! We will be able to organize natural play days, tournaments, and post information and announcements of natural horsemanship happenings.

This group is by invitation only. You are officially invited by receiving this newsletter. If you would like to join Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship's Yahoo group please e-mail Leigh the moderator at freeman@diodecom.net
