NEW!!! A MONTHLY CHALLENGE!
In Jan. the monthly training tip was on improving your side-pass. If you are like me you haven’t been able to play with your horses much in Feb. due to the ice and snow.
Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative in March. So I am challenging all of you reading this to go out and apply that training tip this month to see how much you can improve your side pass on the ground.
At the end of the month it would be fun to hear from some of you dedicated students of natural horsemanship to find out how it went for you. Then we can share your reports and be inspired and motivated.
If you did not recieve the monthly training tip you must join our mailing list in order to get it. Sign up by going to the join mailing list page.

MARCH NEWSLETTER "What is a Partnership?
|
|
Dear Horse lovers,
It is after two am and I cannot quit thinking about all the things that I have learned in the past two years about what it means to have a partnership with a horse.
It is much more than…….:
• good physical care for the horse.
• a nice ride anytime you wish.
• blind or forced obedience.
• entertainment for the human and work for the horse.
• winning the biggest trophy or buckle.
• finding the right horse for you.
• knowing the right techniques and tricks.
• having the normal tools and equipment.
• figuring out a quick fix to any problem.
• developing a proper headset.
• being able to sit on top of a horse without falling off.
• tolerating unsafe behaviors.
• using comfort and discomfort. (which is negative reinforcement)
• sending your problems away for someone else to fix without being a part of the solution and transformation.
• just loving your horse.
• becoming dominant over your horse.
• taking uncalculated risk.
• doing things the same old way because you’ve always done it that way.
Please notice that I said it is MUCH MORE THAN these things. In the above list of ideas some of them may be included in your definition of a partnership with your horse and some of them would be better left out. Either way there is so much more to a true partnership with a horse than the afore mentioned, which may include:
• Looking after the mental, emotional and physical health of the horse.
• Riding is not the primary focus but a wonderful privilege never to be taken for granted. A partnership is more about the quality of the relationship.
• Developing communication using a language based on respect, trust, and fairness which are able to flow both ways.
• Fun and play for both the horse and the human.
• Winning your horse’s heart.
• Becoming the right person for you horse.
• Listening to what the horse is trying to tell you then reading it properly so you know how to handle each situation before it gets out of hand.
• Relying on your power of observation and understanding the nature of a horse so you don’t have to resort to bigger and harsher equipment which will only become a crutch for your own inadequacies as a horse handler.
• Thinking like a problem solver which may include going backwards first and then taking the time to move forward at a pace according to the confidence level, ability, and understanding of the horse, which may not be within the timetable of the goals you have set.
• Realizing that flexion and impulsion are the key foundational ingredients for collection. You must first have the mind and emotion of the horse in order to get true physical collection; otherwise it is just a forced habit.
• Staying mentally connected at all times with your horse while riding. Allowing harmony to happen by moving with the horse. Moving your body in the same fashion as you expect the horse to move.
• Keeping both your horse and you safe through proper preparation before attempting something new. Confident leadership from you which has just the right amount of assertiveness mixed with kindness will keep you both safe. Too much aggression or too much passivity will decrease the safety for both of you.
• Remember positive reinforcement creates motivated learners. If a learner is uncomfortable or unconfident they may get the task accomplished but understanding, retention and willingness to do it again will be compromised.
• Be willing to look in the mirror and accept responsibility for the problems your horse may have. Quit blaming the horse. Reach out for help for both you and the horse. Sending the horse off to get fixed without you being involved in the solution and transformation may only put a band aide on the injury and may not permanently heal the wound. Training for both you and the horse will be critical for long term success. A trainer can help you get a good start, but the ultimate success of your horse's long term development is the responsibility of each individual owner. Selling the horse may not solve all of your horse problems either. It could work but, I have known more than one person who got rid of one horse and ended up having the same problems or worse with another horse.
• Love without leadership may cause rebellion.
• Domination without love may break the spirit.
• Taking uncalculated risks with a horse is just plain silly. The horse is dangerous enough without you not thinking through the situations you are putting yourself and your horse in. Set your horse up for success! Always pay attention, because when you become complacent you may end up saying “There was no warning, ……..” (You fill in the blank)
• Be dependable and consistent, yet try to think outside the box and use some creativity. An open mind to learning will create variety which will keep your relationship fresh. Give yourself some freedom to experiment. You might be pleasantly surprised at what you discover you and your horse can do together.
Last remember a partnership involves close cooperation between two parties having specified and joint rights and responsibilities. Do you know your rights and responsibilities in this partnership? Do you know your horse’s rights and responsibilities in this partnership? Are you both in close cooperation, or is it all one-sided?
I found it interesting that in the dictionary another meaning for partner is “one of the heavy timbers that strengthen a ship’s deck to support a mast.” It is a very descriptive analogy of what it means to be a partner for your horse. Are you able to be the kind of partner that can strengthen your horse’s confidence in order to support the activities you wish to do with him?
Happy Trails,
Sherry Jarvis

NEED YOUR YOUNG HORSE STARTED WE CAN HELP!
We will be having three young horse handling clininc this spring and summer.
They will be at Chance Ridge on April 20, July 20 and Aug 17th from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm
The reason for the long day is we will be dividing the class up so we don't over work the young horses by making them learn for long periods. Instead we will take turns and give the horses frequent short learning periods.
Sessions will be from:
9:00-10:00 Introductions/classroom learning
10:00-12:00 First session
12:00-1:00 Lunch Break
1:00-3:00 Second Session
3:00-5:00 Third Session
5:00-6:00 Supper Break
6:00-8:00 Fourth Session
8:00-9:00 Reflections/Question Answers/ Evaluations
We will focus on reading the horse, helping the young horse gain confidence in the environment, the handler and in himself, trust and respect on the ground, sensitizing and desensitizing exercises, cues we will use when riding, flexion, saddling, and possibly mounting bareback if the horse and rider are ready.
Another way we can help you with your young horse is take your horse for 30, 60 or 90 days:
We are now teaming with Sarah Sortum from Calamus Outfitters Ranch near Burwell, NE.
Sarah is nearly through her PNH level 3. She has been training mules and horses for years. Mules are her first love, but she is also very good with horses.
A lot of you have asked me to take your horses home with me, or to start your young ones. However because my traveling schedule is so hectic, I just don't have time to devote to this, my students, and all the other responsibilities I have making sure Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship is always growing and progressing in a positive direction.
I am pleased to announce that I can finally meet this need through Sarah. I know that Sarah will develop your horse in a natural and safe manner. She will be able to take horses at the end of March. Please call or e-mail Sherry for more information about Sarah.
After Sarah has helped your horse, I will be glad to help you understand how to continue developing your partnership. This will help insure that you get your money's worth and all the hard work Sarah has put into your horse will remain and keep progressing positively.
Because this is a partnership, it is important that both the horse and the owner have equal training, otherwise you may be disappointed with the money spent on training the horse alone.

We already have 50 members on our Heart in Your Hand Yahoo Chat Group.
This group is dedicated to natural horsemanship students lead by Sherry & Keith Jarvis whose aim is to help both the horse and rider to become even more successful by presenting a balanced foundation from which you can build a confident, trusting, respectful relationship, without sacrificing the spirit of either the horse or the human. This is a place to share natural horsemanship philosophies and how horses change our lives including those little victories/defeats that don’t mean anything to the "normal" crowd, to have a place to celebrate/vent leadership issues, blinding flashes of the obvious, or brainstorm creative ideas! We will be able to organize natural play days, tournaments, and post information and announcements of natural horsemanship happenings.
This group is by invitation only. You are officially invited by receiving this newsletter. If you would like to join Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship's Yahoo group please e-mail Leigh the moderator at freeman@diodecom.net
