MARCH NEWSLETTER
Hello everyone,
What a beautiful February we had. I found myself outside playing with horses without a coat on several days. During my playtime I have mostly been practicing for my demonstration at the NE Horse Expo on March 10-12. I also had the opportunity to practic my demonstration in front of an audience at an Outdoor Business Expo in Ord, NE on Feb. 25-26th.
It was interesting to compare the differences in the way my horse responds in front of an audience to when he is at home. I find that Cisco is much more exerberant and expressive in front of an audience. He was very playful and energetic. At home he is much more sluggish. It is like he says, "Yah, Yah, I know this stuff, could we just get on with it." However when he gets in from of a crowd he likes to show off. It is funny how he seems to like their applause.
When I told them that I was going to ride Nekkid they said, "isn't it a little cold for that?" I had to agree, even though we were in an indoor arena I was really cold before I was finished. We entertained the crowd with liberty play on the ground using obstacles. Then we progressed to bareback riding in a Cherokee bridle followed by the stick and neck rope. On the first day Cisco held the Cherokee bridle in his mouth just fine. On the second day we gave it up, because he continued to spit it out. I guess he didn't like the taste of it on Sunday, Ha Ha!
For those of you who are wondering what a Cherokee bridle is; it is a sting or very small diameter rope of any kind. I use cotton clothsline string about 10 feet long. It is very
expensive and quite complicated! NOT!
You can make a loop and tie it, so you have one rein, or it can just be a continuous string so you have two reins. My goal is to have my horse so soft that I can ride with a kite string in my horses mouth and bend him laterally without breaking it. We're not quite there yet.
There was one old cowboy who came up to me after the demo who said, "girl, you can really ride!" I said "thanks, that means a lot." That was the end of the conversation. I suppose that was enough words spoken. We knew the rest in our hearts, and more words simply weren't necessary.
Everyone thought Cisco was a mustang. One lady even
said, "is that a real horse?" WHAT? I didn't know quite how to answer that one.
I met Jamie and Vickie Sich with the Nebraska Horse Trails
Committee, they had a booth and we had a nice chat. They are sponsoring a horse riding and driving award program called Trail Time, I would like to encourage you to check it out. You may e-mail trailtime@nebraskahorsecouncil.org with questions, or to sign up go to www.nebraskahorsecouncil.org and select Trails Committee.
At the NE Horse Expo Cisco and I were privileged to do several demonstrations, where again he put in his 2 cents worth. On the first two days I kept loosing him while circling at liberty. My friend Jody Brott said he was a performance horse, and that he was checking out his audience. She was so right! On Sunday I allowed him freedom to say Hi to everyone, and show them how cute he was. Then he joined right back up with me circling perfectly. What a ham! Even though he messed up the choreography I was very proud of him, because he always touches my heart with his. Many people were teary eyed by the time it was over. He has that effect on many. What a special horse I have found! I will love him forever!!!!!!!!!
I was also honored to play with a couple of other horses in a round pen at the Expo. We taught the crowd how to join up, gain respect & trust, plus back, disengage, and sidepass. Both horses made me look good as they bonded with me right away. The little filly "Salty" was moving to suggestions at liberty within 45 minutes. "Zip" joined up with me in about 30 seconds and found comfort, safety and play with his new partner. A big thanks to Colleen and Corie for allowing me to interact with their horses.
I enjoyed the Expo and am looking forward to next year already. I am so excited that the idea for the Women's Confident Leadership Camp was birthed at the Expo. Thanks to all the women who spoke with me and my friend Jody Brott who inspired and encouraged me to move forward with this idea.
It is going to be wonderful. Please keep checking the website and my e-mail newsletters for the details. You won't want to miss it. It will be life changing!
I would also like to mention the Equine Psychology Class that started in Burwell in February. I am offering this class for the first time through local Adult Education Programs in Burwell and Ord. However we would like to expand to other communities.
It was very exciting to get 5 people to come to the first class in Burwell. Two were teenage girls, one of the girl's mother, and YES, even two COWBOYS! I was thrilled to get two men. It seems that these days horse activities are weighing heavy on the female side.
On the first night of class, we were all in tears, or at
least choking up a little bit before the night was over(even
the men). During the middle of the sessions one student said, "this is like a marriage counceling class". Remember you horse doesn't care how much you know, he cares how much you care. On the last night of the class, everyone wanted it to continue. It seems we only touched the surface of what there is to learn from each other.
If you are interested in a class I want to encourage you to sign up as soon as possible. Please don't wait until the last minute. It helps with our scheduling and planning, and remember it is a first come first serve basis. Unlike many clinicians who take 15-30 people in a class I only take 10 so that I can give you lots of individual attention.
Hope to see you soon!
Happy Trails,
Sherry Jarvis

DEMONSTRATION LOCATIONS! We are looking for demonstration locations such as county fairs, equine related events, stables, horseclubs etc. These demonstrations are a cost effective way to introduce horselovers to natural horsemanship ideas which can lead to a safer and more enjoyable relationship with your horse.
They are also inspirational and educational.
Please contact us, if you know of an excellent location for such an event.
Thanks, Sherry
