Horse Heaven
What would it be like in Horse Heaven?
It might be similar to the Parelli center in Pagosa Springs,
A magical ranch nestled in the San Juan mountains,
Where we learned to soar with eagle’s wings.

Before we arrived we had to survive Wolf Creek Pass,
With its steep grades and winding curves,
We discovered the journey might not be easy,
But our friendly greeter Megan helped calm our nerves.

Once our luggage, tack & horses were settled in,
We wandered around in pure heavenly bliss,
Hardly believing that our dream had become reality,
Not knowing how much of this place we would miss.

The orientation meeting was filled with excitement,
As we waited for our instructions and rules,
To our surprise there were no rules, only options,
And they promised to give us the necessary tools.

After a delicious New Your steak supper,
With our horses we wanted to play,
So off to the playground to experiment,
Beginning the molding of new habits like soft clay.

The total saturation of horse psychology,
Plus the bonding that develops a “herd of two”,
Touches our heart & soul deep within,
Then gives us cause to lick and chew.

This horseman savvy that we are seeking,
Can’t be found in a jar & it’s not for sale,
It’s like a puzzle to be put together,
If we isolate, separate & recombine we cannot fail.

We were having so much fun getting dusty & dirty,
Even when we stepped out of our comfort zone,
For true learning & permanent change to occur,
Sometimes you just have to figure it out all alone.

We discovered so many things about ourselves,
Like how our fears can hold our horse back,
That if we will move closer & stay longer,
Then develop a communications system we are on the right track.

Our imaginations were stretched this week,
Hopefully we learned to think outside the box,
To have a plan, but be able to adjust to the moment,
And finally to use principles & keys to free our locks.

As we shared the highlights of our experiences,
We found a new appreciation for our horses try,
We felt what it was like to walk in their shoes,
By the time we were finished there wasn’t one dry eye.

The parting was both sad and sweet;
As we went our separate ways,
Remembering our cherished moments,
With great expectation for the coming days.

We stressed the importance of the journey,
That the process comes before our goals,
Now it is our responsibility to develop the relationship,
Mirroring the image of mares and foals.

As I pray for all the new friends that I made,
And think of your beautiful faces,
I wish for you oneness with your horse,
As you ride into Heavenly places.
