DECEMBER NEWSLETTER "Do you have a theme for your 2008 goals?"
Dear Horse lovers,

Traveling over 400 miles many weekends during the year allows me quite a bit of “think time” to reflect on the past year and look ahead to goals I want to accomplish in 2008. As I was thinking about my goals for 2008 a theme started to emerge.

Be Approachable (Become the right person)
Stay Accessible (Stay persistent and consistent)
Make it Applicable (Relevance with practical purpose)

These are not only the goals I have as a professional instructor dedicated to the development and progress of natural horsemanship for horse lovers who are open to growth and learning, but to the many horses I have the privilege or encountering including my own.

Be Approachable:
I think an approachable person is one who doesn’t think so highly of themselves that others are intimidated by them. It is also a person who is more concerned with helping others improve rather than judging their faults. It is someone who is able to encourage, praise, and support even the smallest of progress and effort. They are patient enough to take preliminary steps and work hard in order to achieve desired goals. This kind of person is an inspiration to others not because they are perfect but because they are motivated to rise above their own faults. They are easy to meet or deal with and others are drawn to be closer to them.

Wow, I just described a super human and the best horseman in the world. I certainly haven’t come anywhere near this greatness yet. However, here are some strategies I plan to implement in 2008 to move closer toward achievement of being more approachable to both horses and people.

As an instructor for both people and horses I strive to maintain the best attitude by rephrasing the negative to positive words and conduct. In order to be approachable for both horses and people I choose to radiate self- confidence through my posture, expressions, thoughts, words, skill, decisions, and dress. I realize first impressions do count whether you are a horse or a person.

I will not expect immediate perfection from myself, the horse or person I am working with but instead I will set us all up for success by taking the time it takes to go through the preliminary steps that will lead us to the desired results. Because horsemanship is a process not a quick fix, a long term relationship where the participants grow closer will be developed and nurtured. I will persevere with consistency, discipline and care even through the hard times.

There is a lot of talk about “approach and retreat” as a very important principle in the philosophy of natural horsemanship. It usually refers to “give and take” or “moving closer and then farther away from something scary”. I would like to offer another idea about being approachable for our horses in a way that draws them closer to us with a deeper willingness to perform out of heart and desire. Most of us want a horse that is easy to deal with. Have you ever wondered if horses think you are the kind of person that is easy to deal with, or not? Do they want to draw nearer to you or get away from you? Do you only see your horse’s faults or are you finding ways to help him be the best he can be? Are you approachable?

Stay Accessible:
I think a person who stays accessible is capable of being reached, understood, influenced, or appreciated. They are easy to speak with because they are open. This is the type of person who is available when needed. This person can draw spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical inspiration and guidance from associates, other thinkers and also from self. In order to stay accessible one must be able to maintain focus and resist distractions, as well as being able to prioritize everything and say, “No,” when necessary.

Again, I have not perfected the above list of characteristics, but I have examined how each of these can relate to my life as a professional teacher of both people and horses. If you are reading this chances are you are also a teacher of people and horses, even if it is not your chosen profession. By owning a horse or having a child you are a teacher whether you like it or not. I encourage you to look at the above list and examine yourself as I have to see where your strengths and weaknesses may lie because in order to be a good horseman or parent you must stay accessible.

As my business has grown over the last four years I have tried to prioritize by setting goals, I have been open to try new things, I have said “no” to certain things, I have been influenced by other professionals, I have sought to understand horse owners and their needs, and most of all I have learned to appreciate the horse. All of this has caused an evolution of both myself as a horsewoman and the vision I have for Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship. It will be exciting to see what unfolds in 2008 as I set out to be more approachable and remain accessible to those who have dedicated themselves to further inspiration and guidance as they continue the journey.

One of the reasons many of my students have remained regular is I am devoted to stay accessible to them in many ways. Even though miles separate us, I make very effort to keep returning to areas where there are people interested in learning and growing. Besides yearly camps, clinics, and demonstrations I also have other services to keep us connected, like my website, weekly newsletters, articles, monthly training tips, a blog, personal e-mails, phone calls, study groups, a yahoo chat group, and regular private lessons. In 2008 I intend to add some more services like, training DVD’s, pod casts, study materials that can be purchased as e-books, and other surprises.

It is apparent that in order to stay accessible it takes a lot of serious time and energy. Horses take time, and if you want to be the best you can be for your horse in 2008 then it is time to get serious and stay accessible. Let your horse influence you, they have a lot to teach you about time! I guarantee they are on a different time zone than most humans.

Make it applicable.
There is nothing worse than sitting in a meeting or a classroom bored stiff because you cannot see the relevance of what is being discussed or taught. I don’t imagine a horse likes running around in mindless circles any better. Since we have already established that anyone handling a horse is a teacher then it is each person’s responsibility to include a practical purpose while training a horse.

By making sure each lesson is applicable to learners whether they be humans or horses, many benefits will be gained such as: The learner will be able to:

• Solve definite problems,
• Apply general principles,
• Make a valid connection,
• Pay closer attention,
• Perform with more diligence,
• Add exuberance and excitement
• And retain more information.

I have heard people comment about not being able to see the purpose in ground work with horses, or riding in a halter, etc. As a facilitator of learning for both horses and their human partners I have a tremendous responsibility to provide an environment where change and growth is a natural result of applicable information. If the learner cannot see how the techniques and principles are applicable to every day life then they will loose their desire for more knowledge. A good teacher inspires the quest for knowledge, and that is my goal for 2008 at least with human students.

With equine students I will continue to seek creative ways to keep them interested in learning and performing even better by giving them puzzles to solve and tasks with a purpose. Keep in mind if you say your horse is bored, then you are the one who is boring. If you have run out of ideas start looking around you there are resources everywhere. (TV, Books, DVD’s, Internet, Friends, Trainers, clinics, etc.) The main thing is use obstacles both live and inanimate to keep your horse interested and cross train to keep your horse from getting sour.

In closing I encourage each of you to develop a theme for your 2008 goals. It will give you a clear vision and purpose. If you can see the idea in your mind, then you can make it appear into reality with a concrete plan. Finally take advantage of every opportunity your theme creates, and you will make greater progress in 2008 than you can imagine.

Approachable: "Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms." -- George Eliot

Accessible: "Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome." -- Booker T. Washington

Applicable: "A little learning is a dangerous thing but a lot of ignorance is just as bad." -- Bob Edwards

Happy Trails,
Sherry Jarvis

"Horsemen share knowledge. Showmen hide it in a corner and go home." -- AQHA Judge Dale Livingston

JOIN A STUDY GROUP THIS WINTER!

In addition to the many clinics and lessons we will continue offering throughout the winter, we have formed some study groups for those interested in getting together to support and encourage one another on their horsemanship journey.

There are several women in the Lincoln, Broken Bow and Grand Island areas who have already started meeting on a regular basis in order to advance even quicker and stay motivated toward excellence with horses.

We would like to see other groups popping up in other areas. I have a lot of students in the Omaha area also, so if you are interested in starting or joining a study group call Sherry 308-730-2150.

The Lincoln group will do two dates a month so that if you miss one you can make the other.
The first or second week of the month will be on a weekday and the third or fourth week of the month will be on a weekend.
For now the locations change because sometimes we meet at a person's house to watch DVDs,
and other times we will meet at an arena to ride.

The Central NE Group will meet one month in Broken Bow and the next month in either Ord or Burwell.
There is another group forming in Grand Island meeting on Mondays at Painted Horse Hills.

So Please call ahead of time if you want to attend.

Here are the tentative dates set for the study groups. :
Dec. 4 Lincoln, NE (Horse Play or DVD’s at Ann’s)
Dec. 15 or 16 Ord, NE (Horse Play at County Indoor Arena)
Dec. 22 Burwell, NE (Sherry’s DVD’s & Christmas Party)
Dec. 28-30 Lincoln, NE (Sherry will be at BKT Arena for Private lessons & Mini clinic, providing the weather is good for travel)
More dates are availabe in 2008 go to the schedule page.

STUDY GROUP GUIDELINES

These study groups are not exclusive, meaning we want to encourage people to come who may not be familiar with "natural horsemanship". We don't want this to be a club where only the "chosen few enlightened ones" can join, however we also don't want this to turn into a place where people bring problem horses expecting free lessons and a quick fix. If you have a problem horse please seek the support of a professional trainer like Sherry.

These groups are meant for students to express and show what they have learned with each other. It is a day of sharing creative ideas and free expression.

In order to encourage people who have never taken a lesson from Sherry to attend we respectfully ask that the first time you attend you do so as an observer only. This way you will have a more objective view of what it is all about by not having to attend to a horse. You will get a better sense of the expression and techniques of natural horsemanship.

Of course if the study group is watching DVDs that day instead of playing with their horses, then anyone is encouraged to attend whether they have taken a lesson from Sherry or not. It doesn't even matter whether you have a horse yet, maybe you are just thinking about getting one, then by all means come and learn.

Please always call before coming 308-730-2150

This is a place to share natural horsemanship philosophies and how horses change our lives including those little victories/defeats that don’t mean anything to the "normal" crowd, to have a place to celebrate/vent leadership issues, blinding flashes of the obvious, or brainstorm creative ideas! We will be able to organize natural play days, tournaments, and post information and announcements of natural horsemanship happenings.
